Update on Howe Sound's Ocean Health

In early September, Ocean Wise released Ocean Watch Átl’ḵa7tsem/Txwnéwu7ts/Howe Sound Edition 2020. This report follows the 2017 Ocean Watch - Howe Sound Edition that gave a snapshot assessment of species and habitats, clean water, sense of place and well-being, coastal development and livelihoods, stewardship and governance, and seafood.

In 2019, Aroha Miller, Manager of Ocean Watch, and her team began the process of bringing stewards, scientists and others working in the sound together to start gathering information. The updated report added species and gave more focus to the biggest threat, Climate Change. A series of launch events took place in September, a recording is available through links on the Ocean Watch website. If you love the ocean and Howe Sound, in particular, you will enjoy reading this edition.

We support ongoing collaboration among groups working to improve our region’s health. The Ocean Watch Action Committee seeks to advance actions from the Ocean Watch strategic plan in order for First Nations and Local Government members of the Howe Sound Community Forum to provide leadership in protecting coastal ocean health in Howe Sound.
