Partnering with scientists and local experts, David Suzuki Foundation & Ocean Wise have created a conservation map displaying Atl'ka7tsem/Howe Sound’s unique marine ecology and recommendations for how to protect it.

Howe Sound/Átl’ḵa7tsem Marine Reference Guide

The Marine Reference Guide is an initiative that will improve aquatic ecosystem health in Howe Sound/Átl’ka7tsem by bringing together knowledge associated with the region’s aquatic ecological and human-use values. This knowledge is available in a centralized online map that supports informed decision-making, collaborative management, marine spatial planning, and community education.

  • This supports decision-making, marine social planning, and community education by visualizing how ecological and human values interact and overlap.

  • Provides narrative resources that describe best practices to help protect significant ecological and human values associated with the aquatic environment

District of Squamish Marine Strategy and Planning

New marine zones are under development for Squamish marine areas as part of Stage 2 of the overall Squamish Zoning Bylaw Update in 2020.

What is proposed? - New marine-specific zones and regulations are proposed for Squamish. The intent of these municipal marine regulations is to provide for and enhance the coordination, shared use and protection of marine coastal areas within the District of Squamish. Updating and refining the District’s zoning tools is identified as an immediate priority action within the Squamish Marine Action Strategy (endorsed in 2018).
