On World Oceans Day 2021, we hosted a talk by Shelia Byers of the Marine Life Sanctuaries Society about Glass Sponge Reefs, the marine core protected areas of our Biosphere Region. The webinar explains the history and significance of their discovery, the science and research to date, their contributions to the ecosystem, and how we need to protect them.

Rare film footage of the Six Gill Sharks, present in the very deep waters in Howe Sound, was captured by three people in the Stingray submarine. They had been under for 8 hours to get this video footage! Learn more here.

Jessica Schultz, our Marine Ambassador, provides the introduction about Sheila and the presentation.

Ruth Simons, Lead of the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative moderates the questions. For more information and references, contact sheilabyers@mlssbc.com Visit www.mlssbc.com and donate to their volunteer efforts.
