Tourism Research Project

Name of the project: Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound Sustainable Tourism in the Outdoor Recreation Sector

Capilano University Outdoor Recreation and Tourism faculty member Roy Jantzen is the instructor of TOUR 206: Directed Self-Study

One of his students, Sophie Cheshire, on this 12-month self-study course began her project in the spring 2022 term. The project will take place over three phases and directly ties to the objectives of HSBRIS. The first phase of the project was to create a directory of outdoor recreation (OREC) businesses that operate within and/or travel to the Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound region and uncover how their practices impact the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Student Sophie Cheshire presenting to Federal Tourism Minister

Throughout the first term, various opportunities were presented for the student to pitch the project at different events. Most notably, the student was invited to introduce their project to the Federal Minister of Tourism, Randy Boissonnault. The minister took a keen interest in the project, particularly on Indigenous tourism and inclusivity.
