Remembering Chief Bill Williams

Members of the Howe Sound Community Forum came together on Bowen Island on October 3rd, 2025 for the bi-annual event, this time hosted by the Bowen Island Municipality. The forums bring together elected officials, staff and observers in the spirit of cooperation to share information and network for the well-being of the region. Read about the history of the forums here. This forum took place days after the passing of Találsamkin-t Siyám Chief Bill Williams.

The Howe Sound Community Forum was formed in 2000 by elected representatives who recognized the need to communicate and cooperate with each other for the benefit of the Howe Sound region and future generations. It took some time, but in 2002, the Principles for Cooperation were signed by the leaders of the communities at the time. Signatories of this regionally-important document included Chief Bill Williams. The purpose is to provide a forum for local governments, Regional Districts and First Nations discussions to maintain and enhance the economic, environmental, cultural and social well-being of the Howe Sound for the benefit of present and future generations.

Tributes from those who knew and met Chief Williams were shared at the Forum:

” Such a calm and generous voice of Wisdom. I enjoyed our quiet lunch together on Keats Island.” - Trustee Kate-Louise Stamford

“So much gratitude for all Chief Williams shared with the greater community and his leadership for a more just and sustainable world” - Jay Ritchlin, formerly with the David Suzuki Foundation for 20 years.

“ I hold my hands up to Chief Williams, his family and the Nation for all the positive change he helped to make in this world.” - Jeremy Valeriot, MLA West Vancouver Sea to Sky

“An amazing leader, bridge builder and generous educator. Grateful for his wisdom, patience and grace that he shared with so many of us”. Jenna Stoner, Councillor, District of Squamish

“I learned a lot from Chief Bill during the Witness program of the 1990s. I once watched him calm an angry logger by sitting down on a roadside log and inviting him to do so as well. He had an understated presence and quiet dignity that shone.” - Bob Turner, former Mayor of Bowen Island

“I am grateful Chief Williams had the vision and energy to work with settler governments to build positive relationships through leadership and participation in the development of the Forums and the Principles for Cooperation. It is my privilege to support the work of ensuring the spirit of principles for cooperation continues.” Ruth Simons, Executive Director, Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society and convenor of the Howe Sound Community Forums.
