BC Biosphere’s Gathering

In early April, representatives of the three BC-based UNESCO Biosphere Regions gathered for knowledge sharing within the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Region. The Canadian Biosphere Reserve Association initiated this two-day retreat and workshop on Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs). Environment and Climate Change Canada provided funding for this event.

Participants travelled from our Átl'ka7tsem / Howe Sound region and joined colleagues from Mt Arrowsmith Biosphere at Cathedral Grove Park. Together we crossed Vancouver Island towards the west coast. At the boundary of the Tal-o-qui-aht Nation’s territory, we joined Eli Enns, Indigenous Elders, and knowledge holders associated with the Clayoquot Trust and the Isaak Olam Foundation.

We enjoyed learning about the various First Nations enterprises within the Tal-o-qui-aht Tribal Park. We gathered in the IISAAK Learning Lodge at the Clayoquot Campus for meals and meetings.

The Clayoquot Campus teaches Indigenous worldviews and approaches to conservation and sustainable economic development. Our group experienced the land and waters at this beautiful location in Tofino. Many ideas were exchanged from the stories and experiences of those at the heart and origin of the IPCA movement.
