Capacity Building

Building organizational resources - human resources, systems, assets and tools to support the multiple projects and financial management. Engagement at the national level through sharing best practices and providing support where needed, the network of Canadian biosphere reserves can enhance the collective BR contributions to Canada’s Target 1.

Expected Outcome

Solid establishment of the HSBRIS and succession of founding members who will sustain the organization. Knowledge sharing at various levels and capacity building among Canadian BRs.

Activities and expected results between July 2022  (project start date) and July 2026 (date of project completion) are as follows:


+ 2.1 Staffing

Recruitment of Project Director/manager and administrative support. See current staffing here. On Track

+ 2.2 Knowledge Building

Staff training through webinars, attending conferences and courses to 1) ensure a deeper understanding of the role of the various levels of government and First Nations authorities, policy and decision making. 2) effective leadership and project management 3) techniques of dialogue and effectively creating ethical space. 4) Indigenous ways of knowing. 5) other areas of knowledge gaps. + 2.3 Accounting and Reporting Systems

Implementation of project accounting systems and management. On Track

Rental of meeting and work space. On Track

+ 2.5 Administration/Office Tools

Purchase and implementation of Office administration equipment and tools to equip staff members with the technology to work remotely and to conduct effective presentations. Laptop computer, purchase of additional software and licenses as required, projector, teleconferencing equipment, and additional internet/cell phone charges. On Track

+ 2.6 Knowledge Sharing

Participation in and attendance of two staff at Canadian Biosphere Reserve Association gatherings, virtual webinars and meetings. Read about our latest events in our Fall 2024 newsletter. On Track

Key Results:

Overall at the end of this project we will have established our non-profit society and secured partnerships for long-term success in the execution of the BR Management Plan.   

  1. An annual operations review/assessment indicates that administrative systems are streamlined and efficient, effectively support staff, and save time and money. 

  2. An annual operations review/assessment indicates that information is up to date, clear and transparent and easy to access, across secure platforms.

  3. Work situations are flexible, mobile and engage people as measured by an annual survey with agreement of min 4 out of 5 (4 agree, and 5 highly agree).

  4. Productivity is high as measured by yearly staff performance reviews.

  5. In-kind and cash funding is keeping up with federal funding
