Below are current actions in addition to those reported in the Ocean Watch - 2020 Edition

+ 5.1 Strategically fund priority projects for protection of vulnerable species and restoration of critical habitats.

+ 5.2 Support ongoing, and new, long-term data collection initiatives.

  • Bowen Island Municipality Council passed a resolution on June 14, 2021 to commit its portion of funding for five years 2022-2027, towards the production of Phase 2 of the Howe Sound Marine Reference Guide as requested. Refer to Council Agenda for details.

+ 5.3 Allocate resources to clean-up activities (e.g., wrecked, problem and abandoned vessels; plastics and contaminants; shoreline cleanups and appropriate disposal or recycling, especially after storm events).

  • The Sunshine Coast Regional District awarded $4,000 through their Grant In Aid funding program to the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative for clean up of marine debris at Anvil Island in 2020. Marine Debris accumulations in West Bay mostly included large blocks of styrofoam.
  • Bowen Island Municipality paid for the removal of two abandoned vessels in Mannion Bay.
  • Town of Gibsons is working debris removal along the town's breakwater.
  • In May 2022, the Marine Stewardship Initiative will onboard a Marine Debris Coordinator who will be doing a three-month placement through the Ocean Bridge Direct Action program, an initiative through Ocean Wise. This person will be responsible for collecting large scale debris data and coordinating and initiating a clean-up in Átl’ḵa7tsem/Howe Sound.

+ 5.4 Incentivize transitions towards environmentally friendly practices and products, e.g., a zero carbon economy.

+ 5.5 Commit more resources to enforcement.
