CCUNESCO endorses our nomination - Step 3/6 Complete!

In early September, we received very welcome news from Sébastien Goupil, Secretary-General of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO).

“On behalf of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (CCUNESCO), I am pleased to confirm submission of the nomination dossier for the proposed Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound Biosphere Reserve to the UNESCO MAB Secretariat. I would like to congratulate you on this important milestone in your efforts to achieve the prestigious UNESCO designation.”

CCUNESCO serves as a bridge between Canadians and the vital work of UNESCO. They are responsible for ensuring UNESCO Biosphere Reserves fulfill the International framework of the Man and the Biosphere Program. We are four and a half years into the rigorous process for attaining this designation, see The Path to Designation for the steps involved. We are pleased we have successfully responded to the three reviewer’s comments and concluded the completion of the nomination document

“The Canadian Commission for UNESCO has coordinated a thorough evaluation of the nomination dossier assisted by three expert reviewers. Broad support for this project has been expressed by federal, provincial and municipal government representatives; Fisheries and Oceans Canada; First Nations partners; as well as numerous local and regional stakeholders. We are confident that it will make a valuable addition to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.”

Our nomination package has now been sent to UNESCO in Paris for review by the International Advisory Committee. The recommendations from this review panel, step 4/6 of the designation path, will be known in April/May 2021.
